MEET THE PRODUCERS

ABOUT

Melbourne just got its own lofi hip hop radio featuring nothing but local producers. A new 24/7 stream of chill Melbourne beats has launched on YouTube and Twitch to get you through lockdown while supporting Melbourne music.

The hyper-local hip hop stream features beats from 31 Melbourne music producers including Plutonic Lab, Decktektive, Motley, Elle Shimada, Monkey Marc and Mrs Wallace.

The project’s goal is to showcase Melbourne producers and promote Melbourne’s vibrant hip hop scene online, while waiting for the live scene to recover.

It also provides some soothing lofi beats to help Melbournians relax while they’re stuck in lockdown.

The project has support from the community with local hip hop collectives, labels and promoters getting behind it including Chilla Holla, The Get Down and Cyferloop.

The project is created by Melbourne Minute, a two woman team of Emerald MacGill and Kim Williamson. They have a passion for creatively promoting Melbourne music and are embedded in Melbourne’s hip hop scene. Emerald has a background as a rapper, hip hop event promoter and youth workshop coordinator.

The pair were inspired by the worldwide popularity of lofi hip hop streams on YouTube, and decided to create one showcasing Melbourne’s unique music scene.

Emerald MacGill says, “Musicians have been hit hard by the pandemic, especially with the death of our live music scene and Melbourne’s return to a second lockdown. We saw this project as a great way to keep celebrating our local music community. There might be no gigs on right now, but we can bring the vibe online - especially while Melbournians are stuck at home and hungry for something fresh”.

For the video’s visuals, she recreated the calming scene from a popular YouTube stream, ‘lofi hip hop beats to study/relax to’ - with a Melbourne flavour. Filmed in a sharehouse in Melbourne’s inner north, the looping video shows a girl studying at her desk (collaborator Coral Dawn), with a plate of smashed avo on toast, a stack of milk crates, a copy of The Big Issue, and an occasional spritz of hand sanitiser.

If you’re feeling anxious, depressed or overwhelmed in lockdown in Melbourne, put the stream on for some soothing, nostalgic sounds of lofi hip hop, while supporting Melbourne producers at the same time.

The Melbourne lofi hip hop radio stream currently plays music from Melbourne producers Calski, Decktektive, Denno, Dimes[man], Duan, Elf Tranzporter, EarlJam, Elle Shimada, $Gucci, Haze95, I I I I (Four Eyes), JR KS, Kibbz, Lander, Larks Beats, Mista Monk, Monkey Marc, Morganics, Motely, Mrs Wallace, Nealysm, Oscar Poncell, Phoenix Manson, Plutonic Lab, Sean Suade, Symonds, Thom Mitchell, Vision and Wlf.
